Donald S. Berger

Head of School

Mr. Donald S. Berger, became Head of School at Cape Fear Academy, on July 1, 2012. Mr. Berger received a B.A. from Haverford College (PA) and holds a Masters in Education in Administration, Planning, and Public Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He served as Head of School at Cary Academy for 15 years beginning in 1996, its inaugural year. Prior to coming to Cary, Mr. Berger was Head of Upper School and Dean of Students at Manlius Pebble Hill School in DeWitt, NY. His previous experience was as a teacher and coach at Moses Brown School (RI).

Carol Schuler

Carole Schuler

Executive Assistant to the Head of School

In addition to assisting the Headmaster, Ms. Schuler also serves as Custodial Supervisor and Security Coordinator. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, she has lived in various North Carolina locales since 1980, spending 12 years in Charlotte before settling in Wilmington in 2001. While in Charlotte, she worked in development and fundraising for both the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and Belmont Abbey College. She has an A.A. in Humanities from Bellarmine University, in Louisville, KY, and a B.A. in History from North Carolina Wesleyan College.

Nelda Nutter

Director of Admission

Nelda Nutter’s extensive career in education ranges from teaching at the college level to heading independent schools in California, Virginia and West Virginia. Most recently she served as Director of Enrollment at Norfolk Collegiate in Virginia. A native of West Virginia, she completed her undergraduate studies in Political Science and English at James Madison University, where she also later earned her MA in English. Her post-graduate experience includes numerous leadership and education-related studies, as well as being a presenter at conferences and a regional or national representative for several professional boards.

Alison Reid

Associate Director of Admission

Alison Reid joined the Cape Fear Academy community in 2007 as a 7th grade English and Literature teacher. After teaching for five years, she was eager to join the admissions team and contribute to CFA in a different capacity. A native of Ohio, she moved to North Carolina in June of 2006. She earned a degree in Integrated Language Arts from Bowling Green University in Ohio and is certified through NCVPS for online teaching and learning.

Athletic Director

Chris Meehl is a graduate of Guilford College with a degree in Sports Management.  He was a football placekicker for Guilford College.  He has been in education since 1996 as a college counselor, athletic director, and admissions counselor.

Mr. Meehl came to CFA in 2003 and, after serving for two years as Director of College Placement, was named Athletic Director in 2005.

Megan Green is the part-time Administrative Assistant in the Athletic Department.  She comes to the athletic department with a solid athletic background.  A graduate of Laney High School where she was a basketball player and swimmer, she received her Bachelors degree in Athletic Training from UNCW and a Masters degree in K-12 Physical Education from East Carolina University.  She currently coaches for the Waves of Wilmington (WOW) swim team and continues to be a gym coordinator for Halo Hoops on the weekends.

Shana Weatherington-Barclay

Director of Finance and Operations

Shana Weatherington-Barclay grew up in Pinehurst, North Carolina and graduated from Campbell University’s Lundy-Fetterman School of Business with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting degree in 1993. In 1999, she also received her Master of Science in Exercise Physiology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She also has her Certified Public Accountant certificate and is a member of NCACPA.

Mrs. Barclay most recently worked at Earney & Company, LLP as an auditor and tax accountant before joining CFA in July 2007. She has administered employee benefit plans for Southern National Bank, served as a staff accountant for American Refuse Services, Inc., and was a manager with First Health of the Carolinas before relocating to Wilmington.

Robbin Nelson joined the CFA faculty and staff in 2015 as Accounting Specialist. and Transportation Coordinator.   A lifelong resident of Wilmington, she holds a BS in Business from Mount Olive College and an Associates degree in Accounting from Cape Fear Community College.

Financial Services Administrator

Debbie Leonard grew up in New Jersey and moved to Wilmington in 2005. She graduated from Monmouth College, West Long Branch, NJ in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting. She is also a Notary Public.

Mrs. Leonard has worked in the accounting field for over 20 years, working mostly in the non-profit industry. Her employer before joining the Cape Fear Academy family was the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department in NJ where she not only used her accounting knowledge but also became a certified first responder with the CERT team of Ocean County.

Jeannette Crim was born in Washington, DC. She moved from Maryland to Wilmington in 2000 and has worked at Cape Fear Academy since 2003 in the Business Office as the Accounts Receivable Assistant.

Paula Sneeden

Constituencies Coordinator

Paula Sneeden has been a a staff member at Cape Fear Academy for over thirty years. She has held many different positions in her years with the Alumni Director being her favorite. Ms. Sneeden attended CFA in its first full year of existence, graduated, and returned after college. A graduate of St. Mary’s College in Raleigh and Elon University, she has an AA and a BS in Physical Education. Along with her duties as Alumni Director, she supervises the Salute to Seniors and Commencement ceremonies.

Tobi Ragon

Learning Skills Program Coordinator

Ms. Ragon has been in the counseling field since 2000.  She earned an undergraduate degree in Religion and Philosophy from Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida in 2002. After moving to Wilmington in 2003, she attended East Carolina University where she became a licensed school counselor and earned a master’s in Educational Counseling in 2007. She is originally from northern Kentucky and attended the University of Kentucky for two years before moving south.

Most recently Ms. Ragon worked at Pender High School in Burgaw, NC for 5 years.

Heather Sznurkowski joined the CFA Learning Skills Program faculty in 2015.  Hailing from Guilford, Connecticut,  she holds a BA in English with a Spanish Minor from UNCW.  

Becky Clamme

Becky Clamme

Becky Clamme is a Math Skills Tutor, tutoring in all areas of math, including SAT preparation. She received a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Math and a minor in Spanish from the University of Minnesota Morris. Before tutoring at Cape Fear Academy, she taught eight years of high school math in Minnesota, Indiana, and North Carolina. Ms. Clamme has also been a math tutor for more than ten years in the Wilmington area.

Ann Jenkins is a graduate of Campbell University with a BS degree in Elementary Education and minor in Special Education and a master’s degree in Education. She has obtained her Academically Gifted certification and a master’s degree in Reading and Literacy K-6 from Walden University. Her greatest accomplishment in her teaching career is earning her National Board certification in 2000. She retired from the public schools of North Carolina after 30 years of teaching grades kindergarten through fifth grade and began teaching in the Learning Skills Program at CFA in 2007.

Lisa Mansfield is a native North Carolinian, a resident of Wilmington since 1965, and a graduate of UNC-Wilmington. She retired in 2006 from E. A. Laney High School after teaching thirty-two years in North Carolina’s public school system.

Originally from New Jersey, Nancy Phillips is a graduate of Furman University with a degree in Special Education. She spent six years in the public school system before coming to CFA in 1995 to work in the Learning Skills Program.

Todd Morton was born in Houston, TX and came to Wilmington via Panama City, FL. He moved to Wilmington after Hurricane Fran in 1996 after working for 8 years in hurricane insurance repair services.

Flint Hill hails from Newton Grove, NC. He has a BA in Parks and Recreation Management from UNC-Wilmington. Previously, Mr. Hill was employed in construction and real estate here in Wilmington before joining the CFA staff in 2009,

James Head joined the maintenance team in 2014, having worked previously in the New Hanover County Schools. He worked in a similar position there and was also a bus driver which he also does at Cape Fear Academy. His is a graduate of the New Hanover County Schools.

Dave Sorenson

Director of Technology

Dave Sorenson joined the CFA faculty in 2015 as the Director of Technology.  He has an AAS from Pikes Peak Community College and served previously as Technical Support Analyst / Instructional Web Server at Durham Technical Community College for ten years.  Prior to that, he was a Computer Support Technician at North Carolina State University’s library and webmaster for the State of Kansas Department on Aging.

Systems Administrator

Gene Whipple is the Systems Administrator for the CFA Technology Department.  He has a degree is in Computer Engineering and served in the 82nd Airborne Division Association, NC*SA.  Mr. Whipple most recently worked at Kingfisher Systems at Camp Lejeune where he was their Systems Administrator. He previously worked as a field service technician, help desk technician, and was on Kingfisher’s service request management team.

Kyle Heath provides IT support as the Database Administrator.  He has BA in Business Management in Information Systems and is a member of the Association of IT Professionals.  Mr. Heath was a student at Cape Fear Academy for his prekindergarten through third grade years.

Mary Lyons Rouse

Director of Auxiliary Programs

Mary Lyons Rouse joined CFA in November 2012. After graduating from the University of Mississippi, she worked at the A.E. Finley YMCA in Raleigh for over four years as the Sports Director and Director of Sports Camp. At the A.E. Finley YMCA, she worked with children of many ages and created and implemented a multitude of unique programs. Among these were rookie sports, a Durham Bulls partnership, and clinics run by UNC 1993 MVP basketball player Donald Williams. Ms. Rouse also coached JV Field Hockey at St.Mary’s in Raleigh for over four years.

Nurse Amy is a Wilmington native with over 17 years of experience as a registered nurse. After attending UNC-Wilmington, she received her nursing degree from Cape Fear Community College. Having worked labor and delivery, postpartum, and pediatrics, it is evident that she has a passion for maternal child nursing. Nurse Amy also worked as a public health nurse for New Hanover County in school health and conducting postpartum home visits.

Susan Boyer

Lower School Director

Ms. Susan Boyer became Director of Lower School in July 2013. Previously, she served for two years as the Director of Programs at the International School in Vienna, Austria. Prior to that, she was the Elementary Associate Principal and then the Director of Educational Facilities and Program Development at Colegio Franklin D. Roosevelt in Lima, Peru. Having worked in schools on five continents, Ms. Boyer has also been an Assistant Principal in the Wake County, NC schools. She received her B.A. in Education from Virginia Tech, her Master of Science in Education with a focus on reading from Old Dominion, and a Master of School Administration from N.C. State.

Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Ms. Perchard is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth with a degree in Art History. After working and taking courses at Columbia University, she worked as a researcher and writer at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. She earned her Master’s degree in Elementary Education at Bank Street College Graduate School in New York City. She taught PK-2nd grades in private schools in New York City for seven years before relocating to Wilmington in 2006. She has taught at both very traditional and very progressive schools, and her personal teaching philosophy is a marriage of the two. She believes in hands-on experiential learning whenever possible, while recognizing that there are structured, rule-based ways to teach reading and spelling most effectively.

Melissa Slovik graduated from the University of Vermont with a BS in Elementary Education. After teaching in her home town in New Jersey for several years, she and her husband decided to relocate to Wilmington. Mrs. Slovik finds much joy working with young students and loves the creative aspects of teaching. She is currently working on publishing her own children’s book and hopes to write many more in the future!

Gretchen Scoutelas joined Cape Fear Academy in 2012 after nine prior years of teaching. She was born and raised in Connecticut and then moved to Massachusetts where she attended Mount Holyoke College, the oldest all women’s college in the country.  At Mount Holyoke, Mrs. Scoutelas double-majored in Psychology and Education. She has taught K-4th grades in schools located in Texas, Tennessee, and now North Carolina.

Angie Jackson is a graduate of Wake Forest University with a degree in English. Originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, she has lived in North Carolina for many years and worked in the corporate insurance business. Since November 2008, Mrs. Jackson has been a teacher assistant in the Lower School while she pursued her teacher certification at the Watson School of Education at UNC-Wilmington.

Theresa DiBernardo has a master’s degree in Education from Iona College and teaches second grade at CFA. She enjoys teaching math and has a special interest in bringing the history and culture of other countries to her students.

A native of Rotterdam, New York, Ms. McGarry received her Bachelor’s degree in Childhood Education from the State University of New York at Geneseo and her Master’s degree in Literacy Education from The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York. She has been teaching at Cape Fear Academy since 2010.

In the spring of 2011, she completed a respite foster parenting class for New Hanover County and has worked with young children at an orphanage and church in Costa Rica. She also has worked for Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youth in California.

Jay Kranchalk (Mr. K) has been at CFA since 2001.  In that time, he has served as a fifth grade teacher, eighth grade algebra teacher, Middle School Director and Dean of Students, and varsity cross country coach.  Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, he moved to Wilmington after earning degrees from American University and Marymount University in the Washington, DC area.  He taught for five years for Fairfax County schools in VA.

Bill Kanzinger came to Cape Fear Academy in the fall of 2003 after 11 years of teaching in Wilmington, New York City, and Cleveland, Ohio. During his career, Mr. Kanzinger has taught every grade level from first through fifth, as well as K-8 Physical Education. In the fall of 2008, he switched tracks again to work part time as the Lower School Math Specialist and part time in the technology department.

Kimberly Halle joined CFA in 2005 after being a classroom teacher for sixteen years. Having taught pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade levels, she became CFA’s Lower School Reading Specialist trained in Orton-Gillingham mulitsensory approach to phonics and Lindamood LiPS Therapy.

Gloria Carr has lived in the Wilmington area for nine years.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with University Honor and Honors in Music from UNCW.  Her major instrument was piano, and she has been teaching piano for over eight years. She has played with various groups around town during her time in Wilmington and has a particular interest in song writing.

Mr. Kwabene Williams joined the Lower School faculty in 2013.  A graduate of UNCW with a BS in Business Administration with concentration in management and leadership studies, Mr. Williams also minored in Spanish. He has used these two areas of study to be a translator for Interfaith Refuge Ministries, as well as an international marketing consultant.

Carla Whitwell is a graduate of Roanoke College and has worked in education since 1993.  She has been at CFA since 1999 working in many areas including Middle School administration, the College Placement office, the English department, Admissions, and the Foundations/Learning Skills program.

Trisha Ellison, a graduate of UNC-Charlotte, joined CFA in 2005.  She currently teaches seventh and eighth graders in Spanish and is Assistant Middle School Director.

Maureen Vanscoy

Maureen Vanscoy served as the Curriculum and Instructional Specialist in Secondary English for the Brunswick County Schools from 2010 through 2014. In this role, she was responsible for the mentoring, evaluation, and professional development of fifty English teachers across the five Brunswick High Schools. Her graduate work at Quinnipiac University, Stanford, and Teacher’s College at Columbia University informs her instruction, as does her passion for Language and Literature.

Bill Kanzinger came to Cape Fear Academy in the fall of 2003 after 11 years of teaching in Wilmington, New York City, and Cleveland, Ohio. During his career, Mr. Kanzinger has taught every grade level from first through fifth, as well as K-8 Physical Education. In the fall of 2008, he switched tracks again to work part time as the Lower School Math Specialist and part time in the technology department.

Jennifer Avery Robison

Director of Drama

Ms. Robison teaches Theatre Arts and Movement and directs and choreographs CFA theatre productions.  She holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from Elon University and her MFA in acting from UNC Greensboro.

Ms. Robison performed as a professional company member of the Atlanta Ballet, and, at 15, was the youngest to win a scholarship to the International Choreography Conference.  She has performed as a professional actress, singer, dancer in New York, regionally and around the world for over 16 years.  She has also been teaching and choreographing for nearly as long.

She played Maria Von Trapp over 500 times, in the states and abroad, and can be seen in the extras of the 40th anniversary edition of the Sound of Music; “Julie Andrews Remembers.”  She was nominated for National Broadway Theatre Awards Best Actress.

Rebecca Best teaches Upper School Band, Middle School Band. She holds a master’s degree in Music Education from Boston University and is actively involved in board roles on the Southeastern District Bandmasters Association and NC Bandmasters. Ms. Best has served as a Reader for the AP Music Theory Exam for the College Board for several years and is one of a seven member team of authors of the College Board “Vertical Teams in AP Music Theory” book.

Under her tutelage for many years, the instrumental music program has expanded to win a variety of awards and honors. The bands participate in our community by providing music for many concerts throughout the year, the Lower School Circus, as well as Pep Band at basketball games. She serves as Music Director and accompanist for the Upper School musical, along with the Upper School Pit Band.

In addition to directing the bands, Ms. Best maintains a studio of applied flute and piano students, specializing in the Suzuki method of music education.

Middle School Art Instructor

Lisa Rojek teaches Upper School and Middle School Visual Art classes. She graduated summa cum laude from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor of Fine Arts degree, as well as a teaching certificate in art education. Middle School Chorus Director

Lynn O’Connell holds a Bachelor of Music Education in Voice and Piano from Baldwin-Wallace College and a Master of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from The Cleveland Institute of Music.  Her professional affiliations include the National Association for Music Education, the North Carolina Music Educators Association, the American Guild of Organists, the Actors Equity Union, and the Screen Actors Guild.

Katie Ragan

Katie Ragan

A native of Wilmington, Mrs. Ragan graduated from UNC Wilmington with undergraduate degrees in Business Administration-Accountancy (BS) and Middle Grades Education (BA). Her Masters in Education is in Middle Grades Education from UNCW as well as a graduate certificate in AIG. She holds current NC Licensure in mathematics (grades 6-9) and AIG licensure (Grades K-12). She has taught in both public and private school settings teaching all levels of middle school mathematics and Algebra and Geometry. In addition to teaching mathematics, Mrs. Ragan is an adjunct faculty member at CFCC teaching an introductory course in education to college transfer students who aspire to be teachers.

Virginia Johnson teaches sixth and seventh grade math. She attended New Hanover High School in Wilmington and graduated from UNC-Wilmington.

Caroline Higgins

Caroline Higgins

Caroline Higgins joins the Middle School staff teaching eighth grade Algebra I part-time. She taught math in the Upper School at CFA from 1993 through 2007, having been a tutor at home during her hiatus. Ms. Higgins graduated from Georgia Tech with a Chemical Engineering degree where she met her husband. They spent their first years of marriage in Raleigh, where she received her Math Education degree from NC State.

Sherry Loftfield teaches Seventh and Eighth Grade Science. Her BA is from Warren Wilson College and she has been a member of the CFA faculty since 1985.

Nathan Gergel

Nathan Gergel joined the Middle School faculty in 2013 after teaching in Upper School for two years.  He has been an essay grader for the national AP U.S. History exam for many years.  He received his undergraduate degree at the State University of New York College at Geneseo and earned his Master’s Degree in History at UNCW in 2011.

Trisha Ellison

Trisha Ellison, a graduate of UNC-Charlotte, joined CFA in 2005.  She currently teaches seventh and eighth graders in Spanish and is Assistant Middle School Director.

Lu Xue

Lu Xue

Mandarin Chinese Teacher

Lu Xue is from China. She currently teaches 6th grade Chinese. Ms. Xue received her bachelor’s degree in English language and literature from Anhui University in Hefei, China. With a strong interest in foreign language teaching and learning, she came to the U.S. for graduate study at Vanderbilt University and received her master of education in 2013. She moved to Wilmington shortly afterwards to join the CFA family as the school’s first middle school Mandarin Chinese teacher.

Brian Nobles

Brian Nobles

Mr. Brian Nobles joined the CFA community in December of 2013.  A native of Greenville NC, he graduated from UNCW with a BA in Spanish and a BS in Business Administration with a concentration in Management.  Mr. Nobles studied abroad at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez.  He has previous teaching experience at Coastal Christian High School.

Hugh McManus

Upper School Director

Having been at CFA since 2006, Mr. McManus is a well-known and highly respected educator in the community. He served two long tenures as Principal at Hoggard High School in Wilmington and Topsail High School in Hampstead before coming to CFA. His undergraduate degree is from Wake Forest University and his graduate degree is from UNC-Chapel Hill.

He serves on the Azalea Festival Committee as well as the Salvation Army Board.

Jamison Fee

Jamison Fee

Director of College Counseling

Jamison Fee joined the CFA faculty in 2015 as the Director of College Counseling.  Mr. Fee spent the previous ten years as Webb School’s (Bell Buckle, TN) Director of College Counseling.  Prior to that he taught U.S. History and coached lacrosse and cross country for Pope John Paul II High School and has also served in admissions at the Vanderbilt University Divinity School.  He earned his B.A. in U.S. History from Lipscomb University and his M. Div. from Vanderbilt University.

His professional memberships include SACAC, NACAC, NAIS, NCAIS, SAIS, and ACCIS.

Tobi Ragon

Upper School Counselor

Ms. Ragon has been in the counseling field since 2000.  She earned an undergraduate degree in Religion and Philosophy from Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida in 2002. After moving to Wilmington in 2003, she attended East Carolina University where she became a licensed school counselor and earned a master’s in Educational Counseling in 2007. She is originally from northern Kentucky and attended the University of Kentucky for two years before moving south.

Most recently Ms. Ragon worked at Pender High School in Burgaw, NC for 5 years.

Leigh Ann Hodges

Cameron Hall Office Manager and Registrar

Leigh Ann Hodges has been the Office Manager for Cameron Hall and the Registrar since 2006. She also assists the College Planning Counselor. Mrs. Hodges is a former East Carolina University cheerleader and dance team member. She received her degree from the ECU School of Communication.

Audrey Holsten

Academic Dean

Audrey Holsten currently serves as Academic Dean at CFA, working with faculty in all three divisions on curriculum development and professional growth.  Ms. Holston came to Cape Fear Academy in the fall of 2000.  A native of North Carolina, she received her B.A. in English from Salem College and her M.A. from Wake Forest University.

Ani Scuteri hails from Pittsburgh and holds a bachelor’s degree from California University of PA. In addition to teaching Spanish, Mrs. Scuteri is also the Dean of Students in the Upper School and is the sponsor of the International Club.

Amanda Holliday

Amanda Holliday is a proud 1993 graduate of CFA who then graduated with honors from UNC-Chapel Hill with a BA in English and minors in Creative Writing and African-American Studies. She was chosen as an NCAIS Master Teacher in 2010 and continues as an avid member of this group to study and implement 21st century education in and out of the classroom.

Teresa Lambe is a graduate of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and UNC Chapel Hill. She attended UNC Wilmington for her graduate work in Curriculum, Instruction, and Supervision.

Mallory Tarses

Mallory Tarses

Mallory Tarses received her undergraduate degree from Brown University and master’s degrees from both Johns Hopkins University and UNC-Wilmington, both in Fiction Writing. She teaches American Literature at CFA and is a Learning Skills teacher for the Upper School. She also teaches the Verbal and Writing Skills components of the school’s SAT Preparation courses and works in the Center for Writing and Reasoning.

The Arts

JEN AVERY

Jennifer Avery Robison

Director of Drama

Ms. Robison teaches Theatre Arts and Movement and directs and choreographs CFA theatre productions.  She holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from Elon University and her MFA in acting from UNC Greensboro.

Ms. Robison performed as a professional company member of the Atlanta Ballet, and, at 15, was the youngest to win a scholarship to the International Choreography Conference.  She has performed as a professional actress, singer, dancer in New York, regionally and around the world for over 16 years.  She has also been teaching and choreographing for nearly as long.

She played Maria Von Trapp over 500 times, in the states and abroad, and can be seen in the extras of the 40th anniversary edition of the Sound of Music; “Julie Andrews Remembers.”  She was nominated for National Broadway Theatre Awards Best Actress.

Rebecca Best

Upper School Band

Rebecca Best teaches Upper School Band, Middle School Band. She holds a master’s degree in Music Education from Boston University and is actively involved in board roles on the Southeastern District Bandmasters Association and NC Bandmasters. Benedict Fancy

Film and Video Productions Instructor, Performing Arts Technical Director

Benedict Fancy is the Film and Video Productions Instructor as well as Performing Arts Technical Director at CFA. As a screenwriter, Mr. Fancy recently optioned his first feature film screenplay to a European production company and, as an independent filmmaker, he has directed three films and several episodes of a television show for the FOX network. With more than a dozen years of experience freelancing in technical theatre and the local film industry, as well as serving on the board for the Cucalorus Film Festival, Mr. Fancy always looks forward to working with his students on upcoming productions at Cape Fear Academy.

Jan Reid

Publications Advisor

Mrs. Jan Reid is the Publications advisor. Her responsibilities include the yearbook, Shoreline, and the Upper School newspaper, The Hurricane. A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, she earned her National Board Certification in English/Language Arts in 2002. After a 28-year teaching career in public schools, she joined the CFA faculty in 2006. She comes to CFA from Hoggard High School, where she taught sophomore English and advised the yearbook for 18 years.

Outside the classroom, Mrs. Reid works with the North Carolina Scholastic Media Institute as a member of its summer workshop faculty. She has also worked with both Herff Jones and Taylor Publishing as a part of their summer workshop staff.

Cody Adams

Ross “Cody” Adams

Cody Adams is the Math Department Chair at CFA. Mr. Adams first came to Wilmington in 2000 as a NC Teaching Fellow at UNCW where he received a BA in Mathematics in 2004 and a MS in Mathematics in 2006. After teaching at Ashley High, where he served as the Math Department Chair for two years, Mr. Adams joined the CFA staff in 2010. He continues to lead the math department at CFA to make it one of the best in the state.

Claire Bennett

Claire Bennett

Claire Bennett is the Math Lab Director and Online Learning Mentor on campus.  She taught Middle School math and Algebra I at CFA from 2006-2010. Ms. Bennett has thoroughly enjoyed adding Upper School math to her repertoire since 2010. As an online learning mentor, Ms. Bennett oversees students who choose to take online classes for content acceleration or transcript enhancement with classes not offered in a brick and mortar classroom.

In addition to teaching, Ms. Bennett served as the Middle School Student Government Association advisor, and she currently coaches the Middle School girls and boys tennis teams. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Union College. After graduation, she lived in New York City for ten years.

Karen Federico

Karen Federico moved to Wilmington from West Islip, New York. Ms. Federico received her Bachelors of Science in Mathematics from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey where she played field hockey, as well as a year of lacrosse. In addition to teaching, Ms. Federico is also the Student Community Service Supervisor at CFA and girls field hockey and lacrosse coach. She worked in the summer for the Mathematics Immersion Program teaching Algebra, Calculus, and Probability & Statistics for college students of the Educational Opportunity Fund of New Jersey.

Bobby Palmer

Bobby Palmer

Bobby Palmer received a Bachelors degree in 2005 from Western Michigan University and promptly moved to North Carolina.  He spent one year teaching at East Wake Middle School in Raleigh before making the move to Wilmington. He has also spent four years teaching Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 at Ashley High School.  Mr. Palmer joined the CFA faculty in 2010.

Carr Fullagar

Carr Fullagar graduated from Cape Fear Academy in 2002 and matriculated to UNC-Chapel Hill.  He returned to his alma mater to teach science in 2006.  In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Mr. Fullagar is actively involved outside the classroom coaching Middle School Basketball, Tennis, and assisting the CFA Surf Team.

Jeff McAllister

Jeff McAllister teaches Chemistry and AP Chemistry. Outside the classroom he is one of the Student Government Association’s co-advisors and can also be found on the Youth Legislator trip and surfing with the school’s Surf Club.

Meade McFarlane

Mr. McFarlane teaches Honors Biology, Zoology, Human Anatomy and Physiology and AP Biology. He coaches the varsity boys and girls soccer teams. After graduating from the University of Kansas, he received his M.A. in Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. He was a Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica for two years where he taught environmental education to elementary school students.

Keni Rienks

Keni Rienks

Keni Rienks teaches AP Environmental Science and Honors Physics. She is also the Green Club Advisor and an assistant to the Surf Team. A native of northern Illinois, Mrs. Rienks is a graduate of UNCW and has lived in over 10 cities all over the world. During the summers, Mrs. Rienks works for George Mason University in Virginia as a Faculty Advisor to the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment.

Laura Bowen

Laura Bowen has been a member of the CFA community since 1992. Currently, she teaches AP World History, World History, and Global Issues. Fulfilling a lifelong goal, Mrs. Bowen recently completed a master’s in Education with a concentration in secondary social studies. She has also served as an AP reader for several years.

Mark Campbell

A member of the CFA community for several years, Mark Campbell teaches US History, AP US History, and AP US Government. Mr. Campbell graduated from Arizona State University with a master’s degree in History and Spanish.

He coached the CFA Cross Country team to a state championship in 2004. He currently coaches the Surf Team, and is a Junior class advisor and National History Day, Surf Club and Outreach Club moderator. He is also a grader for the national AP government examination and CFA Surf Camp teacher every summer.

Mr. Campbell participated in teacher exchanges in Australia in 1985 and 1988. He has led student tours to Australia, Mexico and Europe. He was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to Japan in 2007. He led CFA student trips to Japan in and China. He also participated in a second Fulbright Fellowship in Kyoto, Japan in summer 2009.

Julie Capps grew up in Clayton, NC and attended East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.  She graduated in 2000 with a BS in History and then completed the degree requirements there to receive her MAEd in History in 2002. Previously, Mrs. Capps taught at Topsail High School for 7 years before joining the CFA faculty in 2009.  She is also the CFA Social Studies department chair.

Ryan Chapman

Ryan Chapman

Ryan Chapman joined the Cape Fear Academy community in 2014. He currently teaches US History part-time at CFA and also teaches history at University of North Carolina Wilmington and Cape Fear Community College. He graduated from Appalachian State University with a BS in History, Secondary Education, and attended University of North Carolina Wilmington for a BA and MA in History. He has been in education since 2008.

Kwabene Williams

Spanish Teacher

Mr. Kwabene Williams joined the Lower School faculty in 2013.  A graduate of UNCW with a BS in Business Administration with concentration in management and leadership studies, Mr. Williams also minored in Spanish. He has used these two areas of study to be a translator for Interfaith Refuge Ministries, as well as an international marketing consultant.

Jonathan Allen holds a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University as well as education certification from UNC-Wilmington. He is actively involved outside of the classroom as co-sponsor of the Surf Club and has contributed his considerable guitar-playing talents to various musical functions, including at the Upper School’s annual Star Search competition.

Rachel Hatfield

Rachel Hatfield recently she completed her Master’s in Spanish at UNC-Wilmington from which she also received her Bachelor’s in Spanish and Anthropology.

Mrs. Hatfield has been an educator since 2001, teaching at both Topsail and John T. Hoggard High Schools. She has organized international travels for her students on several occasions and is most fulfilled when opening the eyes of her students to the history and majesty of Europe, particularly Spain.
