Susan Mixon Harrell has been Director of Admission at Cape Fear Academy since 1988. She says she has very much enjoyed watching the school grow from a student body of 280 to the current enrollment of well over 600.  Her BA from Salem College is in Psychology with teaching certification in Exceptional Children - Learning Disabilities. She taught previously in the Wake County Schools and at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh.

Mrs. Harrell enjoys volunteering in the community with several civic and non-profit organizations.  A diehard fan of UNC-Chapel Hill basketball, Mrs. Harrell also likes reading, going to the beach, and social networking. And she never met a dog she did not love! 

Carla Whitwell is the Associate Director of Admission and Middle School Dean. She is a graduate of Roanoke College and has worked in education since 1993.  She has been at CFA since 1999 working in many areas including Middle School administration, the College Placement office, the English department, and the Foundations/Learning Skills program.  Mrs. Whitwell is an avid boater and enjoys reading, cooking, going to the movies, being at the beach, and spending time with her husband and daughter.

Laurie Bernard has enjoyed working at Cape Fear Academy since 1989. Her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are from UNC-Chapel Hill. She and her husband Phil have one daughter, Caroline, who graduated from CFA. Mrs. Bernard enjoys playing and singing medieval music in her free time.  Lately, she is learning to appreciate jazz.
