Upper School English  
     
Andrew Collins

Andrew Collins currently teaches grade 12 English and grade 12 AP English at CFA.  A National Board Certified Teacher and native of South Carolina, he received a BA in English (1997) and Master of Arts in Secondary English Education (2001) from the University of South Carolina, subsequently teaching at Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, SC, for seven years before moving overseas with his family. Mr. Collins has spent the last three years at the Franconian International School in Erlangen, Germany, during which he taught IB English and Theory of Knowledge, as well as the English Literature and First Language English courses comprising part of the International General Certificate of Secondary English.  When not teaching, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, fencing, playing guitar, and, when he gets the urge, juggling.

 

   
Maria Derivan  
Maria Derivan is currently teaching English 9, Honors English 9, and English 11 at CFA.  She has spent the past three years teaching at the Vance County Early College High School before finally deciding to move to Wilmington.  Outside of school, she enjoys spending time at the beach and playing with her dogs.   
                   
 
Amanda Holliday  
Amanda Holliday currently teaches English 10, Honors English 10, and English 11.  She also enjoys advising the Diversity Club and Creative Writing Group.  Mrs. Holliday is a proud alum of CFA and graduated with honors from UNC-Chapel Hill with a BA in English and minors in Creative Writing and African-American Studies. She was chosen as an NCAIS Master Teacher in 2010 and continues as an avid member of this group to study and implement 21st century education in and out of the classroom.  Outside of school, Mrs. Holliday most likes spending time with her husband and daughter.  She also loves reading, yoga, watching movies, and any outdoor activity.
 
                   
    Barbara Proctor  
    Proctor

A longstanding member of the Cape Fear Academy community, Barbara Proctor teaches British literature to seniors and directs the Writing Center. In addition, she is the faculty advisor for the Judiciary Council. A graduate of Wake Forest, she is an avid ACC basketball fan, especially the years Wake is doing well.  Mrs. Proctor loves to do crossword puzzles, travel, and read.

 
                   
    Mallory Tarses  
   

Mallory Tarses received her undergraduate degree from Brown University and master’s degrees from both Johns Hopkins University and UNC-Wilmington, both in Fiction Writing.  She teaches American Literature at CFA and is a Learning Skills teacherr for the Upper School.  She also teaches the Verbal and Writing Skills components of the school’s SAT Preparation courses and works in the Center for Writing and Reasoning. In addition to spending time with her fabulous daughter, Ms. Tarses enjoys fiction writing, photography, and tennis.
