The assessment is based on a nationally recognized, standardized behavior observation created by the Gesell Institute in New Haven, CT. Some of the skills evaluated include language, memory, visual-motor skills, math and reading readiness, and visual discrimination. These assessments typically take place in January and early February of the winter prior to enrollment. After-school care is offered at an additional cost for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The teacher-student ratio is approximately 1:12. The goals of the program are to provide a warm, nurturing environment consistent with the philosophy and mission of Cape Fear Academy and to provide a variety of child-centered, non-academic activities, which include free play, small group activities, and rest time. The Lower School Reading Specialist assesses all kindergarten and first grade students at the beginning of the year, mid-year, and near the end of the year to ensure that all students are gaining the necessary skills to become successful readers. Students needing remedial or enrichment in reading skills work with the specialist in small groups daily. All pre-kindergarten students also receive whole group multisensory phonics instructions by the Reading Specialist two days a week using the Orton-Gillingham approach, a highly successful way of teaching early reading skills. Technology Lower School students are given opportunities to explore the Think Lab, one of the area’s most technologically advanced classrooms, where thinking skills are fostered through technology, manipulatives, games, and puzzles. Here, children are encouraged to be creative in their endeavors with the understanding that there is frequently more than one right way to obtain an answer and that the journey itself can sometimes be more important than the final destination. This state-of-the-art classroom includes: A wall-mounted Smart Board interactive whiteboard with ceiling mounted LCD projector Senteo personal response systems designed for the Smart Board 6 networked computers Wireless internet access Mindstorm Robots each with dedicated computer systems iPod Touches with educational software Garmin hand held GPS devices Games and manipulatives spanning multiple age ranges and covering various skill sets Need-based financial aid is awarded to families with students in grades K-12 who qualify, with Middle and Upper School students receiving the highest priority.
