Arts - Band

Upper School Band is a performing ensemble made up of experienced woodwind, brass, and percussion students. It performs many times during the year for a variety of school functions.  Sub-sections of Upper School Band include Pep Band which performs for home basketball games, Pit Band which performs for the US musical at historic Thalian Hall, Concert Band, and Honors Band.

Maintaining a consistent level of excellence, many members compete and earn seats in the All-District Band, NC All-State Band, and Carolina Honors Band.  Upper Schoolers also have the opportunity to delve deeper into their love of music by taking AP Music Theory.

Middle Schoolers with no prior musical experience have the opportunity to join Beginning Band, whose goals are to become proficient on the individual instrument, to learn to play as a group, and perform full band arrangements competently.

Once the basics are grasped, students may join the Intermediate Band which requires at least one year of experience on a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. It is a continued study of the instrument which includes playing together as an ensemble, utilizing a band method book, and a wide variety of concert band repertoire. The goals of Intermediate Band are to learn required scales and rudiments for the specific instrument, to improve tone quality and intonation, to continue reading skills and improve sight reading, to become proficient on the individual instrument, and to play as an ensemble performing varied band arrangements.  Students gain confidence and experience by performing at numerous in-school and community events.
