I am proud to introduce you to Cape Fear Academy.   As I enter my third year leading CFA, I continue to be moved by the caring, warm nature of our community.  This genuine concern for every CFA student is deeply rooted in our core values of respect, integrity, accountability and resilience and our mission, "Cape Fear Academy is a learning community committed to discovering and developing individual potential, preparing each student for success in college and life."

As the largest independent school of nearly 600 students in eastern North Carolina, Cape Fear Academy enjoys a stellar reputation for academic excellence. From our youngest students, 3 year-old Little Explorers, who distinguish themselves through DIBELS literacy scores beyond the first grade level, to our oldest students whose Advanced Placement Test scores are among the nation's best, Cape Fear Academy students are top achievers.

Our students' academic excellence is evident far beyond strong standardized test results. We see excellence daily in our students' eagerness to participate in class discussions, their willingness to ask provocative questions, and the simple act of always completing their homework.  And when our students run into the occasional obstacle, their exceptional teachers offer compassionate support.  At CFA, it is common to see faculty providing assistance to students before school starts and long after the day ends.

Yet Cape Fear Academy is much more than academic excellence. We offer students boundless opportunities to explore co-curricular interests and develop new passions.  Over 90% of our students play an interscholastic sport, 100% are involved in the fine and performing arts, and we offer numerous after school activities and clubs for students at every grade level.

I can't think of a better time for your family to consider joining the CFA community.  We are embarking on a new 5-year strategic plan that is replete with initiatives to further strengthen our academic program and our community's character.  Here is a sample in each division:

Lower School

  • Columbia University's Writer's Workshop with Reader's Workshop coming next year
  • Piano and drama added to chorus in the 5th grade arts program

Middle School

  • Mandarin Chinese as a world language option
  • An accelerated math program for all middle school students
  • A new daily advisory, character education program

Upper School

  • Debate as an elective course
  • A World Exchange Program
  • Summer Internships

I hope you will visit and experience firsthand CFA's exceptional program and facilities.  If you have any questions about CFA, please contact Mrs. Carla Whitwell, Director of Admissions, by phone (910-791-0287) or email (  )  Or, if you would like the Head of School's perspective, I would be happy to answer your questions as well.

We truly appreciate your interest in Cape Fear Academy.
