The After School Program is available to students in grades PK-5. Since Pre-Kindergarten is a half-day program, the After School Program offers an option for those students to stay until 2:45 when older siblings are dismissed. Other options allow any Lower School student to stay until as late as 5:30. The goals of the program are to provide a warm, nurturing environment with a variety of non-academic activities such as free play, cooking, art projects, and games. Older students do have an opportunity to work on homework assignments. There is an additional fee for this program. More than 60 Lower School students meet weekly to participate in Chess Club. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are also part of their after school options. Girls on the Run is another active group for grades 3-5. Private lessons are also available in piano, flute, voice, violin, viola, and guitar for our youngest students, as well as group Chinese lessons. Community service projects begin in Lower School with each grade, as well as the Lower School Student Government having specific projects. For Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten, the effort may be as simple as sharing their musical gifts with residents of retirement and nursing homes. For other grades, there have been projects to collect pet food for the local humane society and raise money to buy cows for third world countries through Heifer International. Our Lower School has been recognized for many years by the American Heart Association for its highly successful fundraising for Jump Rope for Heart. |
