    We played St. Andrews Catholic School from Myrtle Beach in our home opener.  Both teams got off to a slow start in the first quarter before they found their rhythm in the second quarter.  St. Andrews was up by 6 points before a buzzer beater by Anna Kate Stephenson cut the score to 13-9 at half.  CFA jumped out to a great start in the second half with strong play by Margaret Johnson and PJ Middleton.  CFA led 19-15 at the beginning of the fourth quarter before St. Andrews mounted a spirited comeback.  CFA had the ball and a one point lead with 11 second left.  After a turnover, St. Andrews launched a half court shot to win the game.  The shot bounced off the backboard to preserve a 23-22 win for the CFA 8th grade girls' basketball team.  Margaret Johnson led the team with 7 points and PJ Middleton chipped in 6 points.  

    We are off for the holidays and will resume practice on Wednesday, January 2nd.  Our next game is against Wilmington Christian Academy on Friday. January 4th at 4:30pm.

     The 8th grade girls' basketball team hosted Wilmington Christian Academy on Friday afternoon.  The Hurricanes got off to a quick start and led 12-4 at the end of the first quarter.  Sally 

    Sloan led the lead with 10 points in the first quarter.  Playing tough defense, the Hurricanes stretched their lead to 16-4 at halftime.    Margaret Johnson and Anna Kate Stephenson played tough interior defense and limited WCA to only one shot per possession.    CFA continued to play well after halftime and won the game 27-10.  Sally Sloan led the way with 17 points while Nansi Holt, Anna Kate Stephenson, Louise Stephenson, and Liza White also contributed to the scoring effort.  CFA gets back into action on Monday, January 7th with a 4pm home game against Myrtle Grove Christian School.

     What a defensive battle between CFA and Myrtle Grove Christian School.  Both teams got off to a slow start with neither team scoring in the first quarter.  The teams heated up some in the second quarter and the score was notched even at 6-6 at halftime.  CFA came out more focused in the third quarter and stretched the lead to 12-6.  The front court of CFA played excellent interior defense with Margaret Johnson and Anna Kate Stephenson blocking many shots.  Louise Stephenson scored a key basket late as CFA finished with a hard fought 14-9 victory.  Louise led the way with 6 points with PJ Middleton chipping in 4 points and Sally Sloan and Margaret Johnson adding two points a piece.  The victory moved CFA to 4-0 on the season with a 2-0 conference record.  

    We travel to Harrells Christian Academy to take on the Crusaders on Wednesday afternoon at 4pm.

    CFA traveled north to face the Crusaders of Harrells Christian on Wednesday afternoon.  Cape Fear got off to a good start as Sally Sloan hit an early 3 pointer to spur CFA to a 9-5 first quarter lead.  CFA played tough defense in the second quarter and led 11-8 at half.  Both teams slowed down in the third quarter as neither team was able to score.  The fourth quarter was tense as both teams played hard over the last few minutes.  Harrells cut the lead to one point with three minutes remaining before Liza White scored four points late to hold off the home team.  The final score was 17-12 with Sally Sloan leading the way with 7 points.  Liza White chipped in four points and Nansi Holt, PJ Middleton and Margaret Johnson also scoring.  Hats off to CFA for their tough defense. CFA is 5-0 overall.

    The team finishes up a busy week with an away game at Wilmington Christian Academy at 5:15pm on Friday evening.

    CFA headed across town on Friday to take on the Patriots of Wilmington Christian Academy.  CFA got off to a great start and led 10-0 after the first quarter.  Anna Kate Stephenson paced the Hurricanes with 6 first quarter points.  CFA continued to play well in the second quarter and led 16-4 at halftime.  In the third quarter, Sally Sloan scored 6 of her game high 12 points and CFA pushed their lead to 23-10.  In the fourth quarter, Clara Gold scored on an amazing shot and sealed CFA's 28-13 win over WCA.

    Besides Sally's 12 points, Anna Kate poured in 8 points.  Liza White, Margaret Johnson, Millie Cowden, Nansi Holt, and Clara Gold also contributed with baskets on the offensive end.  The defense was led by the tenacious Louise Stephenson and her 6 steals.

    CFA is now 6-0 and hosts a strong St. Marks team on Monday afternoon at 4pm.

     CFA returned to action today and hosted St. Mark in the main gym.  Both teams came into the game tied for first place in the league.  St. Marks got off to a quick start and led 7-2 after the first period.  Both teams implemented a full court press and played tight defense.  St. Mark was able to transition well and led 14-4 at halftime.  CFA came out of the break and cut the lead down to 8 points in the third quarter and trailed 19-10 at the end of the third quarter.  CFA was unable to get any closer and lost their first game 33-19.  Sally Sloan led the Hurricances with 9 points and PJ Middleton chipped in 4 points.

    CFA is now 6-1 and 4-1 in the conference.  We travel to Fayetteville on Friday for a non-conference game with Fayetteville Academy.

    CFA traveled to play Fayetteville Academy for their Homecoming on Friday afternoon.  Due to illness and out of town travel, CFA only had 5 players for the game.  We got off to a good start and trailed 14-8 at halftime.  PJ Middleton chipped in 6 of our 8 points in the first half.  The girls ran out of gas some in the second half and were unable to cut the lead down to single digits.  The final score was 31-13 but does not indicate how hard the girls played.  PJ Middleton led the team with 9 points while Margaret Johnson scored the other 4 points.  Liza White, Millie Cowden, and Lilli Johnson all played tough defense.  Thanks to Lilli for moving up from the 7th grade team so that we would have enough players for the game.

    We get back into action after the three day weekend as we travel to Monkey Junction to take on Myrtle Grove Christian at 4pm on Thursday afternoon.

    CFA traveled down to Monkey Junction for an away game against Myrtle Grove Christian School on Thursday afternoon.  Myrtle Grove got off to a fast start by scoring the first four points of the game.  CFA settled down and went on a 10-0 run to lead 10-6 at halftime.  Millie Cowden scored three baskets in the first half for a total of six points.  CFA continued to play tough defense in the third quarter and they often limited Myrtle Grove to only one shot per possession.  Sally Sloan was aggressive in attacking the basket and hit three free throws in the third quarter.  CFA stretched its lead to double digits in the fourth quarter before a late Myrtle Grove run cut the lead to single digits.  When the final buzzer sounded, CFA had won its 7th game by a total of 23-14.  Millie Cowden lead the way with 8 points and Sally Sloan contributed 5 points.  In addition, Margaret Johnson had 4 points and the trio of PJ Middleton, Louise Stephenson, and Anna Kate Stephenson all scored 2 points.

    CFA hosts its final home game of the year on Tuesday afternoon against Harrells Christian Academy.  CFA is now 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference.

    What an exciting game!  CFA hosted Harrells Christian Academy in the last home game of the year.  Both teams came out playing tough half court defense and points were hard to come by initially. Nansi Holt and Sally Sloan got hot with mid-range jumpers as CFA took an 7-6 first quarter lead.  The game was called tight and both teams began to rack up fouls.  HCA did a good job on the free throw line and the game was tied 10-10 at halftime.  Both teams implemented a full court press in the second half which resulted in many turnovers for both teams.  The game stayed very tight throughout the third quarter and CFA led 17-16 going into the final six minutes.  HCA took a brief lead before Sally Sloan was able to break the press for two layups.  Nansi Holt added a huge bucket late and CFA was able to hold off the Crusaders for a 25-23 win.

    Millie Cowden played exceptional defense and was a rebounding monster down low.  Sally Sloan led the way with 10 points while Nansi Holt added 6 points.  Millie Cowden scored 4 points and PJ Middleton, Margaret Johnson and Anna Kate Stephenson all scored. CFA plays St. Mark on Thursday with first place in the league at stake.

     First place was on the line as CFA traveled to St. Mark for our last regular season game.  CFA got off to a great defensive start holding the undefeated St. Mark team scoreless in the first period.  CFA lead 2-0 on a basket by Millie Cowden.  Both team's offense opened up in the second quarter as St. Mark hit a three pointer to take a brief lead.  CFA battled back with two free throws before St. Mark scored a late basket to take a 10-8 halftime lead.  The two teams played tight and tough defense which lead to a number of foul calls.  Both teams had a tough time from the free throw line in the first half as points were hard to come by.  St. Mark came out strong in the second half by implementing a full court press.  They scored three transition baskets and began to hit their free throws.  Just as St. Mark heated up, CFA cooled off.  CFA only scored one point in the third quarter and trailed 18-9 after the third period.  St. Mark continued to play well in the fourth quarter before Sally Sloan heated up for the Hurricanes.  Sally scored 7 of her game high 10 points as CFA mounted a spirited comeback.  However, St. Mark proved to be the better team on Thursday and won 28-18.

    Sally Sloan had an excellent game on both the offensive and defensive end.  Millie Cowden chipped in 3 points while playing tough interior defense.  Margeret Johnson added 3 points and Louise Stephenson scored 2 points to round out CFA's point total. CFA finishes the regular season with an 8-3 record overall and a 6-2 conference record.  They finished second in the conference and will play a tough Harrells Christian Academy team in the semifinals of the post season tournament.  The game is on Thursday evening at 6:15pm in the gym on the campus of St. Mark.
