Head of School

Ed Ellison

Head of School

Edward M. Ellison became the 11th Head of School at Cape Fear Academy on Wednesday, July 1, 2020.

Most recently Ellison served as the executive director for the office of alumni relations at Tufts University in Medford, Mass. Prior to his work at Tufts, some of his work in independent school includes serving as the head of St. Johns Country Day School in Orange Park, Fla.; the director of finance and operations, admissions officer, teacher, class dean, varsity coach and advisor at the Roxbury Latin School in Boston, Mass.; and as a teacher, varsity coach, advisor and dorm parent at Milton Academy in Milton, Mass.

After receiving his bachelor’s, cum laude, from Tufts University, Ed joined the U.S. Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of captain. After leaving the Marine Corps, he earned his MBA from Harvard Business School.

Jennifer Allen

Executive Assistant to the Head of School Accounts Payable Coordinator

Jennifer Allen joined the Cape Fear Academy team in June of 2019 as the Executive Assistant to the Head of School / Accounts Payable Coordinator. Born and raised in the Southern Tier Region of upstate New York, she ultimately found her way down to North Carolina in 1996. Jennifer has more than 23 years of administrative experience, with her latest position as the Director of Member Development and Relations at the Bald Head Island Club.

Nelda Nutter

Director of Admission

Nelda Nutter’s extensive career in education ranges from teaching at the college level to heading independent schools in California, Virginia and West Virginia. Most recently she served as Director of Enrollment at Norfolk Collegiate in Virginia. A native of West Virginia, she completed her undergraduate studies in Political Science and English at James Madison University, where she also later earned her MA in English. Her post-graduate experience includes numerous leadership and education-related studies, as well as being a presenter at conferences and a regional or national representative for several professional boards.

Alison Reid

Associate Director of Admission

Alison Reid joined the Cape Fear Academy community in 2007 as a 7th grade English and Literature teacher. After teaching for five years, she was eager to join the admissions team and contribute to CFA in a different capacity. A native of Ohio, she moved to North Carolina in June of 2006. She earned a degree in Integrated Language Arts from Bowling Green University in Ohio and is certified through NCVPS for online teaching and learning.

Molly Gumbert

Molly Gumbert hails from Ashland, Kentucky, but decided to fly south to start her career. After earning her degree from Milligan College in Communications with an Interpersonal Emphasis, she joined the CFA family in 2016. She is thrilled to be a part of Cape Fear Academy as an Admissions Associate and the Upper School Cheer Coach. Before moving to Wilmington, Molly worked as Senior Intern in Milligan College’s Communications Department, and was a professional dancer and choreographer in the East Tennessee area.

Paula Sneeden

Assistant Director of Advancement for Alumni Relations/ Welcome Center/Sub Coordinator

Paula Sneeden has been a a staff member at Cape Fear Academy for over thirty years. She has held many different positions in her years with the Alumni Director being her favorite. Ms. Sneeden attended CFA in its first full year of existence, graduated, and returned after college. A graduate of St. Mary’s College in Raleigh and Elon University, she has an AA and a BS in Physical Education. Along with her duties as Alumni Director, she supervises the Salute to Seniors and Commencement ceremonies.

Chris Meehl

Athletic Director

Chris Meehl is a graduate of Guilford College with a degree in Sports Management.  He was a football placekicker for Guilford College.  He has been in education since 1996 as a college counselor, athletic director, and admissions counselor.

Mr. Meehl came to CFA in 2003 and, after serving for two years as Director of College Placement, was named Athletic Director in 2005.

Megan Green

Assistant Athletic Director/Lower School PE

Megan Green is the Assistant Athletic Director and Lower School Physical Education Teacher.  She comes to the athletic department with a solid athletic background.  A graduate of Laney High School where she was a basketball player and swimmer, she received her Bachelors degree in Athletic Training from UNCW and a Masters degree in K-12 Physical Education from East Carolina University.  She continues to be a gym coordinator for Halo Hoops on the weekends.

Shana Weatherington-Barclay, CPA

Assistant Head of School for Finance and Operations

Shana Weatherington-Barclay, CPA is the Cape Fear Academy Assistant Head of School for Finance and Operations. Prior to joining CFA in 2007, she worked at Earney & Company, LLP as a tax accountant and auditor for nonprofit organizations. She has also worked as a manager with First Health of the Carolinas, served as an accountant in the private sector, and administered employee benefit plans in the banking industry. She graduated from Campbell University, Lundy-Fetterman School of Business with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting degree and received her Masters of Science in Exercise Physiology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She also has her Certified Public Accountant certificate and is a member of  AICPA and NCACPA.

Laura Craig

Laura joined CFA in 2020 with almost 20 years of accounting experience, including at nonprofit organizations like Boy Scouts of America and People for People, as well as teaching accounting at Great Falls College Montana State University. Laura is from North Carolina, and is relocating back to the area after several years in Montana and Washington.

Laura has earned her Master of Science, Accountancy, from the University of Phoenix; Master of Science, Community Economic Development, from Southern New Hampshire University; Bachelor of Science, Business Administration/Finance Concentration, from Salem College; and an Associate of Applied Science, Accounting, from Forsyth Technical Community College.

Human Resources Manager

Deb joined CFA in 2020 with over 15 years experience in the Human Resources field with manufacturing and healthcare companies. Deb received her Bachelor’s degree and HR Certificate from National University in San Diego, CA and has the PHR (Professional in Human Resources) certification. Deb moved to the Wilmington area in 2017 after spending 20 years in San Diego and is loving the east coast.

Randy Johnson

Director of Security

Randy Johnson joined Cape Fear Academy as the Director of Security in March 2020 after a 26-year career in law enforcement, including most recently as a deputy with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Department. During his tenure, one position Randy held was a school resource officer responsible for safety and crime prevention. He has also served as a crisis intervention officer, during which time he was trained in police mental health programs to help guide interactions with law enforcement and those in crisis.

Randy has also served as a basketball coach for the Cape Fear Academy boys basketball program for 4 years.

Jeannette Crim

Jeannette Crim was born in Washington, DC. She moved from Maryland to Wilmington in 2000 and has worked at Cape Fear Academy since 2003 in the Business Office as the Accounts Receivable Assistant.

Director of Advancement

Jennifer joined the CFA team as the Director of Advancement in Summer 2016. She received her BS from NC State, and her MPA with concentration in nonprofit management from UNCW.  Jennifer has 21 years of experience in fundraising and consulting in a variety of industries.

Cole Dittmer

Associate Director of Advancement for Communications

Cole joined the CFA team as the Associate Director of Advancement for Communications in August 2018. He is a native Wilmingtonian and received his BA in English from UNC Chapel Hill. Cole brings years of communications, marketing and visual storytelling experience to CFA after working as a reporter in Wilmington, and then a communications specialist for the State of North Carolina at both Tyron Palace and East Carolina University.

Kristen LaCoe

Kristen LaCoe joined the CFA Family as Assistant Director of Advancement for Development and Volunteer Engagement in December 2016.
She received her BA in Organizational Communications from Pfeiffer University, and before tackling her roll at CFA, she spent four years working in real estate.

Gina joined the CFA family in August 2016 as the Advancement Intern and began full-time in August 2017.  She has an undergraduate degree in Business Administration – Marketing and a Masters of Public Administration both from UNCW.  Gina previously worked as a Campaign Assistant for United Way of the Cape Fear Area.

Lauren joined the CFA team as the Communications Associate in January 2020. She recieved her BS in Graphic Design Communication from Jefferson University, located in Philadelphia. Before moving to Wilmington, Lauren previously worked as a freelance graphic designer.

Todd Morton was born in Houston, TX and came to Wilmington via Panama City, FL. He moved to Wilmington after Hurricane Fran in 1996 after working for 8 years in hurricane insurance repair services.

Flint Hill hails from Newton Grove, NC. He has a BA in Parks and Recreation Management from UNC-Wilmington. Previously, Mr. Hill was employed in construction and real estate here in Wilmington before joining the CFA staff in 2009,

James Head

James Head joined the maintenance team in 2014, having worked previously in the New Hanover County Schools. He worked in a similar position there and was also a bus driver which he also does at Cape Fear Academy. His is a graduate of the New Hanover County Schools.

Paul joined CFA in 2020 as the Help Desk Support Specialist. He earned his BA in psychology from SUNY Albany and completed IT network administration courses at Cape Fear Community College.

Mary Lyons Rouse

Director of Auxiliary Programs

Mary Lyons Rouse joined CFA in November 2012. After graduating from the University of Mississippi, she worked at the A.E. Finley YMCA in Raleigh for over four years as the Sports Director and Director of Sports Camp. At the A.E. Finley YMCA, she worked with children of many ages and created and implemented a multitude of unique programs. Among these were rookie sports, a Durham Bulls partnership, and clinics run by UNC 1993 MVP basketball player Donald Williams. Ms. Rouse also coached JV Field Hockey at St.Mary’s in Raleigh for over four years.

Nurse Amy is a Wilmington native with over 17 years of experience as a registered nurse. After attending UNC-Wilmington, she received her nursing degree from Cape Fear Community College. Having worked labor and delivery, postpartum, and pediatrics, it is evident that she has a passion for maternal child nursing. Nurse Amy also worked as a public health nurse for New Hanover County in school health and conducting postpartum home visits.

Originally from New Jersey, Nancy Phillips is a graduate of Furman University with a degree in Special Education. She spent six years in the public school system before coming to CFA in 1995 to work in the Learning Skills Program.

Stephanie Medcalfe

Lower School Director

Stephanie and her husband moved to Wilmington from Indianapolis, Indiana where she was the Assistant Principal for Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School.  Stephanie has taught in both elementary and middle schools and has been a Special Educator.  She graduated from Ball State University with a B.S. in Elementary Education and an M.E. in Educational Administration. She is responsible for the Lower School Faculty and the After School Program.

Kelly Borton has worked at CFA since 1999. She grew up in Ohio and spent several years in California before moving to Wilmington.

Elizabeth Gibbs holds Master’s and Educational Specialist degrees in School Counseling from East Carolina University. She has over 10 years of School Counseling experience in Pender and Greene County Schools. She has served on various community boards including Cape Fear Teen Council and Pender Resource Network.

Jesse Holman

Lower School Music Teacher

Jesse has worked at CFA the past two years as the part-time 3rd Grade Teacher Assistant.  His educational background is in music with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from UNCW.  Jesse has volunteered as an Assistant Music Director for musicals at Roland Grise Middle School and as a Band Director for events at South Iredell High School.  He plays the saxophone and the clarinet.  He performed in the UNCW Chamber Winds in their premier concert at the annual NCMEA conference.

Before becoming the CFA Lower School Art Teacher, Elizabeth has been an LE-2 Teacher Assistant for CFA since 2015. She has a B.A. in Human Services from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Elizabeth is a local artist and won numerous awards in international art competitions. She was voted Best Local Artist by Encore Magazine and has her own art studio downtown.

Howard Jenkins

After retiring from the DuPont Company with 35 years as a chemical engineer, Howard Jenkins obtained a Master’s Degree in 2012 at the University of North Carolina Wilmington to teach high school science. He has taught physical science at Brunswick County Academy and chemistry at both Ashley and Hoggard high schools. Howard started off at Cape Fear Academy teaching tennis in the after-school A.C.E program. In the Fall of 2019 he joined the Cape Fear Academy team as a substitute and tutor in the Learning Skills Program.

Anderson was one of our 2nd Grade Teacher Assistants for 2018-2019, and became a LE-2 Teacher in Primary Education in 2019. She previously worked as a preschool teacher for the First Presbyterian Preschool in Wilmington and was a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurse for the Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas. Anderson graduated from the Dominican College of San Rafael with a B.S. in Nursing. Anderson is a CFA parent and has lived in Wilmington for 14 years.

Shelby graduated from UNCW with a B.A. in Elementary Education.  She gained teaching experience at Edwin A. Alderman Elementary and Mary C. Williams Elementary in Wilmington.  Teaching young children is Shelby’s passion and she’s very excited to be joining CFA.

Melissa Slovik graduated from the University of Vermont with a BS in Elementary Education. After teaching in her home town in New Jersey for several years, she and her husband decided to relocate to Wilmington. Mrs. Slovik finds much joy working with young students and loves the creative aspects of teaching. She is currently working on publishing her own children’s book and hopes to write many more in the future!

She earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Early Childhood Education from Mount Olive College of Wilmington. Amy is originally from Kalamazoo, MI, and she and her husband moved to Wilmington 14 years ago from San Diego, CA.

Mr. Kwabene Williams joined the Lower School faculty in 2013.  A graduate of UNCW with a BS in Business Administration with concentration in management and leadership studies, Mr. Williams also minored in Spanish. He has used these two areas of study to be a translator for Interfaith Refuge Ministries, as well as an international marketing consultant.

Bill Kanzinger came to Cape Fear Academy in the fall of 2003 after 11 years of teaching in Wilmington, New York City, and Cleveland, Ohio. During his career, Mr. Kanzinger has taught every grade level from first through fifth, as well as K-8 Physical Education. In the fall of 2008, he switched tracks again to work part time as the Lower School Math Specialist and part time in the technology department.

Kimberly Halle joined CFA in 2005 after being a classroom teacher for sixteen years. Having taught pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade levels, she became CFA’s Lower School Reading Specialist trained in Orton-Gillingham mulitsensory approach to phonics and Lindamood LiPS Therapy.

Emma has been one of CFA’s After Class Enrichment Instructors for several years and joined CFA as a full-time LE-2 teacher in 2019 and then became a Kindergarten teacher for the 2020-2021 school year. She earned her B.A. in Elementary Education from UNCW and is working toward her Master’s degree in Education Language and Literacy.

Lisa graduated from SUNY New Paltz with a BS in Elementary Education/Mathematics. She earned her Master’s degree in Special/Elementary Education from Touro College in New York. She has taught grades PreK-8 in both New York and Wilmington, and has 11 years teaching experience. She has two daughters who attend CFA, and has been a part of the CFA family since 2016.

Kim Karns is a retired art teacher with twenty-nine years of experience and is now a teacher assistant in Mrs. Connaughton’s kindergarten class. She graduated from UNC-Greensboro with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Originally from Chapel Hill, NC, she has been living in Wilmington since 1980 with her husband, and her family of five children.

Lisa Miller has been a teaching assistant in the Lower School since 2002.  Originally from Michigan, Mrs. Miller and her husband moved to Wilmington in 1985.

Tiffany first started working at CFA as a substitute teacher before accepting the T.A. position.  She went to Cape Fear Community College for medical transcription and also works at CVS Pharmacy.  Her husband, James Head, works at CFA as one of our Facilities Technicians.

Originally, Carrie Casson is from Northport, NY. She graduated from SUNY Cortland where she double-majored in Childhood Education and English.

Gretchen Scoutelas

Gretchen Scoutelas

First Grade Teacher

Gretchen Scoutelas joined Cape Fear Academy in 2012 after nine prior years of teaching. She was born and raised in Connecticut and then moved to Massachusetts where she attended Mount Holyoke College, the oldest all women’s college in the country.  At Mount Holyoke, Mrs. Scoutelas double-majored in Psychology and Education. She has taught K-4th grades in schools located in Texas, Tennessee, and now North Carolina.

Angie Jackson is a graduate of Wake Forest University with a degree in English. Originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, she has lived in North Carolina for many years and worked in the corporate insurance business. Since November 2008, Mrs. Jackson has been a teacher assistant in the Lower School while she pursued her teacher certification at the Watson School of Education at UNC-Wilmington.

Alison Vliet is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a BA in Elementary Education and a Master’s in Curriculum Design. Originally from southern Maryland, she relocated to Wilmington in June of 2012. She joined the CFA faculty in 2013 as a Kindergarten teacher.

Susan Mailey

Susan Mailey, a native of Roxboro, North Carolina, has lived in the Wilmington area for 9 years. She received a bachelors degree in Child Development from Meredith College in Raleigh, NC and has taught in pre-k and early intervention classrooms prior to joining the faculty of CFA, and after teaching Little Explorers at CFA Mailey moved to Second Grade in 2019.

Elisabet will be the Teacher Assistant in Susan Mailey’s 2nd grade class. She is a CFA parent with four children, and has volunteered both at their schools and in the nursery at her church. Previously, Elisabet worked as a receptionist for Seaside Pediatrics in Bluffton, North Carolina.

Laura worked as a substitute teacher for CFA before joining our faculty as a 2nd Grade teacher assistant. Laura was a Kindergarten teacher for Murrayville Elementary for 12 years. She received her BA in psychology and a K-6 teaching certificate from Meredith College in Raleigh. She then received her Masters in reading education from UNCW.

Liam graduated from Wofford College with a double major in business economics and environmental studies. He has recently been accepted into the University of North Carolina Charlotte grad school for distance education, where he will work toward obtaining his NC teaching license.

Liam has volunteered with AmeriCorps, worked with childcare companies, and with New Hanover County public schools as an after school leader, tutor, and as a technology class teacher. Liam moved from Tryon, NC to Wilmington with his wife about two years ago.

Elizabeth Lallathin joined the CFA family as a third grade teacher in the summer of 2016.  She earned her Bachelor of Science from Ohio Valley University, then went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Marshall University. Elizabeth as been teaching since the fall of 2003, and most recently was a fourth grade teacher for Kanawha County school in Charleston, West Virginia.

Christine has taught for 3 years and was an after school assistant and substitute teacher for CFA for 2 years before joining the faculty as a Third Grade teacher. She received her BA in elementary education.

Beckie will be the Teacher Assistant in Elizabeth Lallathin’s 3rd grade class. Beckie is a CFA parent and has substitute taught at CFA since 2017. She taught marketing and finance related classes at Charles E. Jordan High School in Durham, and was a Marketing Director at Coastal Carolina Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Beckie has a B.S. in Business from UNCW and a Master’s in Education and Marketing from NC State University.

Gretchen Soule is originally from Upstate New York and joined the CFA family in 2012. She received a BA dual-certification in Early Childhood and Childhood Education from SUNY Cortland, and also holds a Master’s degree in Literacy Education from St. John Fisher College. Gretchen taught first grade in New York prior to moving to Wilmington. She especially enjoys teaching mathematics and helping students to love this subject.

Nicole Miller is from Annapolis, Maryland. She is a graduate of Shepherd College with a degree in Fine Arts and a minor in Art Education and Studio Art. After graduation, Nicole continued her studies and earned her teaching certificate in Elementary Education.

Kristin joined CFA in 2019 after relocating to Wilmington from Arnold, Maryland where she worked as Adjunct Faculty for Anne Arundel Community College designing and instructing courses for the Department of Health and Human Services. Laura joined CFA in 2016 and is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with an MBA in Elementary Education. She worked 12 years as an electrical engineer for a cellular company and is a veteran of the United States Air Force. She has worked in New Hanover County Schools as an intervention specialist, substitute teacher, and parent volunteer.

Amy Tarallo joined the CFA family in summer 2017. She received her BA in Spanish from Gettysburg College, an MA in Spanish Language & Literature from Middlebury College, a CAGS in Ed Administration & Teacher Supervision from U of NH, and an Ed.D. in Curriculum & k-12 Leadership from Northeastern University. She has 22 years of experience in both public and private education. Before coming to CFA, she worked as a District Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment in New Hampshire.

Ms. Ragon has been in the counseling field since 2000.  She earned an undergraduate degree in Religion and Philosophy from Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida in 2002. After moving to Wilmington in 2003, she attended East Carolina University where she became a licensed school counselor and earned a master’s in Educational Counseling in 2007. She is originally from northern Kentucky and attended the University of Kentucky for two years before moving south.

Most recently Ms. Ragon worked at Pender High School in Burgaw, NC for 5 years.

The Arts

Jennifer Avery Robison

Director of Theatre

Ms. Robison teaches Theatre Arts and Movement and directs and choreographs CFA theatre productions.  She holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from Elon University and her MFA in acting from UNC Greensboro.

Ms. Robison performed as a professional company member of the Atlanta Ballet, and, at 15, was the youngest to win a scholarship to the International Choreography Conference.  She has performed as a professional actress, singer, dancer in New York, regionally and around the world for over 16 years.  She has also been teaching and choreographing for nearly as long.

She played Maria Von Trapp over 500 times, in the states and abroad, and can be seen in the extras of the 40th anniversary edition of the Sound of Music; “Julie Andrews Remembers.”  She was nominated for National Broadway Theatre Awards Best Actress.

William returned to Cape Fear Academy in 2019 as our Middle and Upper School Band Director. He previously taught at Frederica Academy and Darlington School in Georgia. William has a Bachelor’s of Music in Saxophone Performance and Jazz Studies, and a Master’s of Music in Orchestral Conducting, and an extensive concert band and orchestra experience.

Cheryl Kanzinger

Cheryl Kanzinger received her B.A. in Marketing and Management with a minor in Art from Marietta College, Ohio and her M.Ed from John Carroll University, Ohio.  She has taught in Ohio, New York City, and North Carolina.  Ms. Kanzinger began volunteering with the drama department in 2007 and now designs costumes for the Middle School and Upper School productions.  An avid seamstress since the age of five, she has owned her own business and costumed locally for The Dance Theatre of Wilmington’s Nutcracker productions and Dance Express Studio.

Lisa Rojek teaches Upper School and Middle School Visual Art classes. Bill Kanzinger came to Cape Fear Academy in the fall of 2003 after 11 years of teaching in Wilmington, New York City, and Cleveland, Ohio. During his career, Mr. Kanzinger has taught every grade level from first through fifth, as well as K-8 Physical Education. In the fall of 2008, he switched tracks again to work part time as the Lower School Math Specialist and part time in the technology department.

Maureen Vanscoy

Maureen Vanscoy served as the Curriculum and Instructional Specialist in Secondary English for the Brunswick County Schools from 2010 through 2014. In this role, she was responsible for the mentoring, evaluation, and professional development of fifty English teachers across the five Brunswick High Schools. Her graduate work at Quinnipiac University, Stanford, and Teacher’s College at Columbia University informs her instruction, as does her passion for Language and Literature.

Katie Ragan

A native of Wilmington, Mrs. Ragan graduated from UNC Wilmington with undergraduate degrees in Business Administration-Accountancy (BS) and Middle Grades Education (BA). Her Masters in Education is in Middle Grades Education from UNCW as well as a graduate certificate in AIG. She holds current NC Licensure in mathematics (grades 6-9) and AIG licensure (Grades K-12). She has taught in both public and private school settings teaching all levels of middle school mathematics and Algebra and Geometry. In addition to teaching mathematics, Mrs. Ragan is an adjunct faculty member at CFCC teaching an introductory course in education to college transfer students who aspire to be teachers.

Originally from Oaks, Pennsylvania, Brian attended West Chester University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Brian started teaching in Pennsylvania in 2009 and moved to Wilmington in 2014. He has current NC teaching licensure in elementary K-6 and middle level math 6-9. Brian taught in public school settings prior to joining Cape Fear Academy in 2019 as a middle school math teacher.

Mandarin Chinese Teacher

Lu Xue is from China. She currently teaches 6th grade Chinese. Ms. Xue received her bachelor’s degree in English language and literature from Anhui University in Hefei, China. With a strong interest in foreign language teaching and learning, she came to the U.S. for graduate study at Vanderbilt University and received her master of education in 2013. She moved to Wilmington shortly afterwards to join the CFA family as the school’s first middle school Mandarin Chinese teacher.

Lynne Kenney

Upper School Director

Lynne Kenney’s career promotes the 21st Century three R’s of education; Rigor, Relationships and Relevant curriculum. Kenney comes to Cape Fear Academy most recently from Good Hope Country Day School on St. Croix and prior to that was Principal at Eerde International School in Ommen, Netherlands, a day and boarding school for students from preschool to grade 12. As Principal for Eerde, Kenney oversaw academic departments and the development of curriculum; directed the university counseling department; and helped with the forming of a new learning support department.

Jamison Fee joined the CFA faculty in 2015 as the Director of College Counseling and moved to the Upper School Dean of Students in 2019. Mr. Fee spent the previous ten years as Webb School’s (Bell Buckle, TN) Director of College Counseling.  Prior to that he taught U.S. History and coached lacrosse and cross country for Pope John Paul II High School and has also served in admissions at the Vanderbilt University Divinity School.  He earned his B.A. in U.S. History from Lipscomb University and his M. Div. from Vanderbilt University.

His professional memberships include SACAC, NACAC, NAIS, NCAIS, SAIS, and ACCIS.

Justine Worthington

Director of College Counseling

Justine joined CFA in July 2019 as the Director of College Counseling. She previously worked in the same role at St. Johns Country Day School in Florida and Dayton Christian High School in Ohio. Justine graduated with a B.A. in Psychology from Otterbein University and with an M.S. in Instructional Leadership & Organizational Development from Jacksonville University. She has served as a scholarship reader and is currently serving as the North Carolina Communications Liaison for the Southern Association of College Admission Counseling. Justine is originally from Ohio and enjoys exploring the great outdoors, music, and food with her family, especially all at the same time.

Leigh Ann Hodges

Leigh Ann Hodges has been at Cape Fear Academy since 2006. Mrs. Hodges is a former East Carolina University cheerleader and dance team member. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from East Carolina University and her Master’s degree in Counseling from Liberty University. Mrs. Hodges received her North Carolina Counseling Certification January 2016. Her professional memberships include SACAC, NACAC, NAIS, and NCAIS.

Jessica Gaskill

Jessica joined CFA as the Upper School Office Manager in 2019. Jessica taught social studies at South Brunswick High School and was a Pre-K Lead Teacher at Alcami Learning Center in Wilmington. Jessica obtained her B.A. in History and her M.A. in American History from George Mason University. She is passionate about gardening, is a member of the Surfrider Foundation, and loves to surf and travel with her family.

Benedict Fancy

Film and Video Productions Instructor, Performing Arts Technical Director

Benedict Fancy is the Film and Video Productions Instructor as well as Performing Arts Technical Director at CFA. As a screenwriter, Mr. Fancy recently optioned his first feature film screenplay to a European production company and, as an independent filmmaker, he has directed three films and several episodes of a television show for the FOX network. With more than a dozen years of experience freelancing in technical theatre and the local film industry, as well as serving on the board for the Cucalorus Film Festival, Mr. Fancy always looks forward to working with his students on upcoming productions at Cape Fear Academy.

Jan Reid

Publications Advisor

Mrs. Jan Reid is the Publications advisor. Her responsibilities include the yearbook, Shoreline, and the Upper School newspaper, The Hurricane. A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, she earned her National Board Certification in English/Language Arts in 2002. After a 28-year teaching career in public schools, she joined the CFA faculty in 2006. She comes to CFA from Hoggard High School, where she taught sophomore English and advised the yearbook for 18 years.

Outside the classroom, Mrs. Reid works with the North Carolina Scholastic Media Institute as a member of its summer workshop faculty. She has also worked with both Herff Jones and Taylor Publishing as a part of their summer workshop staff.

Amanda Holliday

Amanda Paul Holliday, CFA class of 1993, is the current director for the Center for Writing and Reasoning as well as an English teacher in the Upper School. She graduated with honors from UNC-Chapel Hill with a BA in English and minors in Creative Writing and African-American Studies. She is currently enrolled in the Masters in Curriculum Studies for Equity in Education program at the University of NC at Wilmington.  Amanda also serves as English Department Chair for grades 6-12.

Teresa Lambe is a graduate of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and UNC Chapel Hill. She attended UNC Wilmington for her graduate work in Curriculum, Instruction, and Supervision.

Emily Fancy

Emily Fancy teaches in the Upper School English Department, where she is also a co-advisor to High Tide literary magazine. She has a BA in journalism from UNC Chapel Hill, a master’s degree in creative writing from UNCW, and a graduate certificate in literature from ECU. Prior to coming to CFA, she taught English and writing classes at the college level for more than 10 years. When not teaching, she writes fiction and nonfiction for various magazines.

Becky Clamme is the Upper School Math Lab teacher, tutoring in all areas of math, including SAT preparation. She received a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Math and a minor in Spanish from the University of Minnesota Morris. Before tutoring at Cape Fear Academy, she taught eight years of high school math in Minnesota, Indiana, and North Carolina. Ms. Clamme has also been a math tutor for more than ten years in the Wilmington area.

Cody Adams

Ross “Cody” Adams

Cody Adams is the Math Department Chair at CFA. Mr. Adams first came to Wilmington in 2000 as a NC Teaching Fellow at UNCW where he received a BA in Mathematics in 2004 and a MS in Mathematics in 2006. After teaching at Ashley High, where he served as the Math Department Chair for two years, Mr. Adams joined the CFA staff in 2010. He continues to lead the math department at CFA to make it one of the best in the state.

Bobby Palmer

Bobby Palmer

Bobby Palmer received a Bachelors degree in 2005 from Western Michigan University and promptly moved to North Carolina.  He spent one year teaching at East Wake Middle School in Raleigh before making the move to Wilmington. He has also spent four years teaching Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 at Ashley High School.  Mr. Palmer joined the CFA faculty in 2010.

Jeff McAllister

Jeff McAllister teaches Chemistry and AP Chemistry. Outside the classroom he is one of the Student Government Association’s co-advisors and can also be found on the Youth Legislator trip and surfing with the school’s Surf Club.

Keni Rienks

Keni Rienks teaches AP Environmental Science and Honors Physics. She is also the Green Club Advisor and an assistant to the Surf Team. A native of northern Illinois, Mrs. Rienks is a graduate of UNCW and has lived in over 10 cities all over the world. During the summers, Mrs. Rienks works for George Mason University in Virginia as a Faculty Advisor to the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment.

Carr Fullagar graduated from Cape Fear Academy in 2002 and matriculated to UNC-Chapel Hill.  He returned to his alma mater to teach science in 2006.  In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Mr. Fullagar is actively involved outside the classroom coaching Middle School Basketball and Tennis.

Meade McFarlane

Mr. McFarlane teaches Honors Biology, Zoology, Human Anatomy and Physiology and AP Biology. He coaches the varsity boys and girls soccer teams. After graduating from the University of Kansas, he received his M.A. in Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. He was a Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica for two years where he taught environmental education to elementary school students.

Ed Naessens

Physics Teacher

Ed Naessens is the upper school AP Physics (Calculus), AP Physics (Algebra) and Honors Physics teacher. He has a BS degree in Nuclear Physics from the United States Military Academy (Class of 1981), an MS degree in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and earned his PhD in Nuclear Engineering and Science from RPI in 1999. Naessens is a retired Brigadier General from the US Army, retiring after 38 years of service with his last 12 years serving as the Head of the Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering at West Point. Naessens also serves as an assistant coach for the CFA Middle School Lacrosse team.

Jerry has been a substitute teacher at CFA for the last two years before joining the CFA faculty in 2020.. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a BS in nuclear engineering and then went on to get his Masters in engineering. He worked with GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy.

Gabriella de Souza

Biology Teacher

A native Wilmingtonian, Gabriella graduated from UNCW in 2018 with a B.S. in Biology and a B.S. in Environmental Sciences. Gabriella obtained industry experience by working in the microbiology department at Alcami, a pharmaceutical manufacturing and development corporation in Wilmington. She has been a biodiversity laboratory instructor at UNCW since 2019 and is wrapping up her Master of Science in biology at UNCW. Her thesis focuses on the effects of environmental stressors on seed germination of the invasive species Beach Vitex (Vitex rotundifolia).

Julie Capps grew up in Clayton, NC and attended East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.  She graduated in 2000 with a BS in History and then completed the degree requirements there to receive her MAEd in History in 2002. Previously, Mrs. Capps taught at Topsail High School for 7 years before joining the CFA faculty in 2009.  She is also the CFA Social Studies department chair.

Laura Bowen

Laura Bowen has been a member of the CFA community since 1992. Currently, she teaches AP World History, World History, and Global Issues. Fulfilling a lifelong goal, Mrs. Bowen recently completed a master’s in Education with a concentration in secondary social studies. She has also served as an AP reader for several years.

Nathan Gergel has been a social studies teacher in the Upper and Middle school since 2011. He has been an essay grader for the national AP U.S. History exam for many years. He received his undergraduate degree at the State University of New York College at Geneseo and earned his Master’s Degree in History at UNCW in 2011.

Men's Head Basketball Coach, Director of Basketball Operations, US Strength and Conditioning Coach

Tony joined CFA in 2016 as the boys basketball coach after building a nationally-recognized coaching career. Following graduation from the University of Maryland, he worked simultaneously in the private sector as a business manager as well as in private education serving in a wide variety of roles. At CFA Martin serves students and teams as a Strength & Conditioning coach, teaches Fitness & Well-Being, assists in the Athletic Department and is the Transportation Coordinator.

Rachel Hatfield

Rachel Hatfield recently she completed her Master’s in Spanish at UNC-Wilmington from which she also received her Bachelor’s in Spanish and Anthropology.

Mrs. Hatfield has been an educator since 2001, teaching at both Topsail and John T. Hoggard High Schools. She has organized international travels for her students on several occasions and is most fulfilled when opening the eyes of her students to the history and majesty of Europe, particularly Spain.

Maria Marquez has been an educator since 1989. She has worked in private and public schools both in the United States and overseas. She holds a BA in French Education from Universidad Catolica of Chile and a MA in Spanish Language and Literature  from Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca, Spain. During her career, she has taught ESL, French and Spanish and has also served as an AP Spanish exam reader/grader for the past five years.

Mr. Kwabene Williams joined the Lower School faculty in 2013.  A graduate of UNCW with a BS in Business Administration with concentration in management and leadership studies, Mr. Williams also minored in Spanish. He has used these two areas of study to be a translator for Interfaith Refuge Ministries, as well as an international marketing consultant.
