This overview is intended to explain the leagues in which we play, the tournaments for which we are eligible, and how selection into those tournaments is made.
Leagues in which we compete:
North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association (NCISAA)
This is a league of private schools (day and boarding) in North Carolina. The Cape Fear Academy athletic program is governed by the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association. NCISAA website is www.ncisaa.org.
For athletic purposes it is subdivided into three classifications based on size of school. Schools are designated 1A, 2A, or 3A based on their grade 9-12 student population:
NCISAA State Playoffs and Tournaments for team sports – Boys’ Basketball, Girls’ Basketball, Field Hockey, Boys’ Lacrosse, Girls’ Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Volleyball, Boys’ Tennis and Girls’ Tennis. The tournament field is selected by a NCISAA Seeding Committee. Conference champions receive automatic bids into the 12 or 16 team state tournament fields.
Field Hockey and Girls’ Lacrosse are NCISAA all-classification sports.
NCISAA State Tournament and Meets for team sports –Cross Country and Swimming have open tournaments where all schools qualify.
NCISAA Golf Tournament is determined by an index. Ten schools with the lowest golf indexes are selected for the state tournament.
Coastal Rivers Conference (CRC)
This is a league of independent day schools that are located in the Cape Fear River Region of North Carolina and are members of the NCISAA 2A classification. The schools in the league include: Arendell Parrott Academy, Cape Fear Academy, Coastal Christian HS, Harrells Christian Academy, and Fayetteville Academy.
CRC awards league championships in Baseball, Basketball (B & G), Cross Country (B & G), Golf, Soccer (B & G), Softball, Swimming (B & G), Tennis (B & G), Track (B & G) and Volleyball.
Southeastern Middle School League (SMSL)
Started in the fall of 2006, the SMSL is an eight-school league for private schools in Southeastern North Carolina. SMSL awards league championships in Baseball (Div I), Basketball (B & G – Div I, II), Soccer (Div I), and Volleyball (Div I and Div II).
The schools in the league include: Cape Fear Academy, Friends School of Wilmington, Harrells Christian Academy, Myrtle Grove Christian School, St. Mark Catholic School, St. Mary’s Catholic School, Southeastern Academy, and Wilmington Christian Academy.
