We who live in Wilmington area are blessed. This is a successful and inviting city that some likely take for granted. From the bustling streets of historic downtown, all the way to the relaxing shores at the beaches, the Wilmington area offers a unique and, in some regards, unmatched beauty. However, there is plenty of room for improvement.
One area in which Wilmington is not so successful is the visual appeal of some roadways. This is not necessarily due to a lack of city effort, but to a much larger problem: littering.
Although some of the litter is from out-of-towners, most of it likely is from people who live, work or regularly drive in the Wilmington area. Regardless of who causes the littered streets, this is our home and we should keep it clean.
With the city spending millions to improve roadways, now is a good time to start an Adopt-a-City Street Program like the one in Charlotte. The program would allow schools, churches, businesses, civic groups, and even individual families to pledge to keep an area of local roadway clean.
