On Saturday, February 27th, the CFA debate team had several amazing successes. Nash Riebe competed in the conference JV District Tournament, with over 20 competitors from 7 different schools. After 4 regular rounds, he broke to semifinals, then finals, and, after 10 grueling hours of debate, won the entire tournament, becoming the JV champion of the district. Cape Fear has not had a JV champion for several years, so this is an enormous accomplishment.
Cooper Herrett, Brooks Meine, and Katie Meine competed in another online tournament, with over 50 students entered in Lincoln Douglas debate. Cooper, competing in the Novice division, went 4-0 in the regular rounds, broke to semifinals, and then to finals, and became the Novice runner-up for the tournament, placing second with a 5-1 record. This is nearly unheard of for a Novice, especially when the tournament is only their second ever! Meanwhile, Katie and Brooks competed in the Varsity division, both finishing with winning records, with Brooks placing fifth overall.
Lastly on the recent debate victories, two weekends ago, the final rankings for the district came out. The rankings are based on three conference tournaments and are calculated by record and placement for each tournament. The top 9 in the district are eligible to compete for a national tournament. Cape Fear had two students qualify this year: Brooks, who came in ninth overall, and Katie, who finished seventh.
Congratulations to everyone on their successes, as well as to the entire team for their hard work and commitment this year! And, as always, thank you to our parent judges, Kavita Persaud, and Nathan Gergel for their incredible support throughout the season.
